1. Saudi Stepford Wife - May 7, 2007

I saw a t-shirt with the word “KINKY” written on it hanging in a shop window a few years ago. I went inside and ask to speak with the manager. I explained that in a Miss Selfridge’s in England, all the girls who bought the shirt would understand what “KINKY” meant and would be making a statement by wearing said shirt. But here, especially in the city I live in, the level of English is much lower than in other cities in KSA, most girls wouldn’t understand what KINKY means. Or they may look it up in the dictionary to find it means frizzy, knotted hair and think that’s fine, not knowing it’s alternative meaning. I always wondered if someone thought it was a great joke getting Saudi girls to unknowingly advertise themselves as “KINKY”.

Ha! So that’s my great idea down the pan, eh?
Well, that didn’t last long :oD
anyway – have a wonderful day!

The first T-shirt is kind of ok if you wear it in the privacy of your own home, but the second-is it advertising violence, by wearing “i broke his jaw” T-shirt i think people might get wrong ideas, not just women, but men too. Like it’s acceptable to go and break anyone’s bones as revenge. No fun. Where were these T-shirt made?
I don’t think anyone in Europe/North America would wear any bone breaking T-shirts. They might be all fancy fashionable colors, but no, you’d not sell me one of them. Thanks S for bringing up this issue 🙂

Stepford wife, It is exactly like you’re saying, the level of English is low so many peoople probably don’t get what they are wearing… Last year in Beirut International airport I saw a shy looking girl in hijaab (about 13 years old) wearing a thsirt saying…. You wanna play doctor? Don’t think she realised what she was wearing…

Pia, that was my thought too. I don’t think a man would get away with wearing a tshirt like that and I think it’s unacceptable that women or girls wear it too.And it’s just like you are saying..no one would wear it in Europe( don’t think anyone would get away with that)..
